I’ve been using FreshBooks to track my billable hours since May 1st. So far it’s capable of handling everything I’ve been looking for with fewer than 30 minutes spent reading FAQs, setting up and tweaking settings. Timekeeping was a breeze, intuitive and I found myself actually enjoying the FreshBooks time tracking experience. (A 3rd party iPhone app really helps make this a complete solution, but that’s another post).

After wrapping up my first month of time tracking, I noticed that FreshBooks offers a “Generate Invoice” option. I clicked it, and here’s where it was oh so sweet.
I selected my client and it gave me the option of billing for all of the client’s projects or just specific ones. My needs are basic, and I billed all time for all projects for this particular client. Under each project listed the total billable hours, and the last billed date. I really liked this touch, no more guessing required on my end to figure out what I billed last and when. I selected May 1st to May 31st as my invoice date range (again, my needs are simple). Finally, I was given the option to customize the line items on the invoice. Great.
It automatically totalled up all my time tracking tasks, plotted them in the invoice and that’s it! I clicked Email Invoice & FreshBooks automatically sent it to my client. (My client’s email address was previously stored during the fairly minimal client & project set up process.)
Today, the client commented (without me fishing for one) on how impressive the FreshBooks experience was on his side. He commented on FreshBooks simplicity, pleasant aesthetics and feature-rich feel.
Based on our composite (albeit, early) experiences, I highly recommend at least giving FreshBooks a try. Their service is free for the first 3 clients.
